MEGA is an Auckland based cloud storage and file hosting website that was launched in 2013. Initially the service was only available through its web client, but now dedicated apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS are available.
As of the time of writing, Mega claims to have over 150 million registered users in over 200 countries of the world and 64 billion+ files have been uploaded on its servers. The service is popular for encrypting files with end-to-end locally on the device of the user before they are uploaded to the servers. This means that no one will be able to access the files without the encryption key, not even the employees from Mega.
Mega.nz offers its free account users with a base storage of 15 GB and additional storage of 35 GB trial at signup for one month. Mega also offers additional free storage through various achievements.
File synchronization is available and you can choose whether you want to sync everything from your account or some specific files and folders. For convenience, if you want to add any file/folder to Mega, then you can right-click it and select Upload to Mega, and that file/folder will be copied to your Mega account.
File sharing is also possible by creating links that you can protect with a key and will be accessible to people who you share the link with. You can also protect the links with specific permissions such as read-only, put password and attach expiry dates with the links.
Mega versioning feature is available for the files with the same name. If you upload a file with the same exact name as an existing file then it lets you have multiple versions of the same file.
Additionally Mega Chat is a secure chatting platform which lets you exchange messages, share files, and have audio/video calls with other users through the secure end-to-end encrypted platform.
